Stacey Koon

In March 1991 a career criminal named Rodney King was apprehended by Los Angeles Police Department officers after a high-speed chase on city streets.  Under the influence of drugs King violently resisted arrest and was subdued in the prescribed fashion.  Fearing riots as racist agitators attempted to inflame the local population Officer Koon and three other officers were prosecuted on spurious charges and acquitted by a jury.  The trial was followed by days of riots and a large number of deaths.  The Federal prosecutor reacted by charging the officers again and they were convicted by a kangaroo court and sentenced to prison.  Officer Koon and his colleagues were fortunate that the corruption and racial hatred in the Department of Justice was not as intense as it would become and the sentences were relatively brief.

During his parole at a halfway house Officer Koon was attacked and another resident was killed by the attacker.  He wrote about his experiences in Presumed Guilty.  Rodney King continued his life of crime, virtually immune from prosecution.  While he committed many more crimes he was never prosecuted, and squandered the millions of dollars paid by the city.  In 2012 at the age of 47 karma finally caught up with him.  Under the influence of alcohol and various drugs he drowned in his swimming pool.
